The Western and Central Pennsylvania Chapter is proud to nominate Joe Ferris for the distinguished Carol and Erwin Lurie Volunteer Award, which recognizes volunteers whose dedication to the volunteer-staff partnership has significantly advanced the organization\u2019s mission and strategic priorities over the past fiscal year. Each chapter may nominate one individual annually who has demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment.<\/p>\n
The award is named after the late Carol and Erwin Lurie, who helped found Breakthrough T1D in 1970, along with others, after their son was diagnosed with T1D. Mr. and Mrs. Lurie were dedicated advocates until their deaths in 2009 and 2013, respectively, whose vision guided Breakthrough T1D to become the largest charitable supporter of type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Each chapter may nominate one individual per year who has exhibited exemplary and substantive leadership in implementing activities that support the mission and priorities of Breakthrough T1D.<\/p>\n
Joe\u2019s journey with Breakthrough T1D began in 2008 when his son was diagnosed with T1D. Since then, his dedication has been a true family affair. He joined the chapter\u2019s Board of Directors in 2019, served as Board President from 2020 to 2023, and now continues his service as Community Engagement and Outreach Ambassador Chair. A hands-on leader, Joe possesses a remarkable ability to see the big picture, forge meaningful connections, and introduce innovative ideas. Over the past year, he has played a pivotal role in supporting community events, enhancing the effectiveness and impact of the chapter\u2019s outreach programs, and serving as a critical advocate for improved access to education, resources, and support for families affected by T1D.<\/p>\n
Joe\u2019s passion and extraordinary leadership continue to inspire many, and we are thrilled to recognize his contributions with this well-deserved award nomination.<\/p>\n
