{"id":9716,"date":"2024-08-02T13:57:59","date_gmt":"2024-08-02T13:57:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/northcarolina\/?p=9716"},"modified":"2025-10-21T00:20:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T00:20:11","slug":"back-to-school-with-type-1-diabetes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/charlottewesternnc\/2024\/08\/02\/back-to-school-with-type-1-diabetes\/","title":{"rendered":"Back to School with Type 1 Diabetes"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #002bff;\">Checklist for going back to school with type 1 diabetes (T1D)<\/span><\/h2>\n<h5>\u2022 Talk with your child about how to answer questions from classmates and friends about T1D.<br \/>\n\u2022 Ensure you have a Diabetes Medical Management Plan (DMMP) from your child\u2019s endocrinologist<br \/>\nwhich contains the medical orders that are the basis for your child\u2019s diabetes and education<br \/>\nplans at school.<\/h5>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #002bff;\">Your school nurse should prepare an:<\/span><\/h5>\n<h5>Individualized Healthcare Plan (IHP) for your child based on the DMMP. Some of the things that might be included in<br \/>\nan IHP are: detailed information about their diabetes care at school, when and how often to check their blood sugar, how to treat low and high blood sugars, and administering insulin.<\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<h5>Emergency Care Plan for Hypoglycemia and Hyperglycemia, based on the DMMP, which summarizes how to<br \/>\nrecognize and treat hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia and whom to contact for help. The plan should be distributed<br \/>\nto all school personnel who have responsibility for your child during the school day and during school-sponsored<br \/>\nactivities. A completed copy should be provided to you.<\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<h5>Prior to your child going back to school with type 1 diabetes, meet with your child\u2019s school diabetes care team.<br \/>\nThis team includes your school nurse, administration personnel, teachers, etc. Be sure to address diabetes-related<br \/>\ntechnology (continuous glucose monitors, cell phones, and insulin pumps) in the classroom and establish a<br \/>\ncommunication protocol to ensure you have daily insight into your child\u2019s blood sugar levels and insulin dosages.<\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<h5>Become familiar with 504 Plans, which provide information\/details for diabetes treatment and education-related<br \/>\naccommodations, and determine if your child needs one. If you decide one should be written, it should be completed<br \/>\nin partnership with your school diabetes care team. Learn more about 504 <a href=\"https:\/\/Breakthrought1d.org\/school\">Plans at BreakthroughT1D.org\/school.<\/a><\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<h5>Work with your child to develop a relationship with the individuals they interact with throughout the school<br \/>\nday, including before- and after-school care, lunchroom staff, coaches and sponsors for extracurricular activities.<br \/>\nEducate and train these individuals as necessary\u2013they are a critical part of your child\u2019s diabetes care team. You\u2019ll find additional helpful educational resources you can share at <a href=\"https:\/\/Breakthrought1d.org\/school\">BreakthroughT1D.org\/school.<\/a><\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<h5>Make a plan with your child\u2019s school diabetes care team about how you will communicate with them during<br \/>\nlunchtime. Plan in advance for hot lunches by requesting nutritional information and carbohydrate counts in order to calculate your child\u2019s insulin dosage.<\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Whether your child is starting a new school year or returning to school after a new diagnosis, managing type 1 diabetes (T1D) in the classroom can be a little intimidating.
