Volunteer of the Month – Shelli Gialketsis

in

The Southern Nevada Chapter Volunteer of the Month program is sponsored by our community partners at Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers. Each month we highlight one of our fabulous chapter volunteers and that volunteer receives gift cards for free meals from Raising Cane’s.

We are pleased to announce our Raising Canes Volunteer of the Month for February is Shelli Gialketsis.

Shelli Gialketsis has a treasured history with the Southern Nevada Chapter volunteer program. Each summer, at the end of the fiscal year, the chapter awards the Reed and Shelli Gialketsis Volunteer of the Year, named in honor of Shelli and her daughter, a former Youth Ambassador and current college student living with T1D, for their extraordinary contributions to our chapter.

After serving on the board for six years, almost a decade ago, Shelli took some time off to focus on her family and help her two children prepare for college. This year, Shelli returned to the volunteer team and has offered to help recruit and train the hundreds of volunteers we need for our signature events – the Hope Gala, Cork & Soul, Breakthrough T1D One Walk, and the TypeOneNation Summit. This is an enormous undertaking, and Shelli has already brought new ideas to help the chapter better serve the volunteer teams and the event guests, which will help us better contribute to type 1 diabetes research.

Shelli jumped back into volunteering with the Southern Nevada Chapter just before the Breakthrough T1D One Walk last November. Last month she helped organize all the volunteers needed for the TypeOneNation Summit. This included the teams helping almost 400 people check in for the day, the volunteers helping the diabetes vendors and directing people to the correct rooms, and the teams of volunteers trained to work in the Kids’ Zone so their parents could enjoy the Summit without any distraction or worry about the diabetes care of their children.

If you see Shelli running around during one of our many events, be sure to stop her and say hi. If you would like to join her and help Breakthrough T1D as a volunteer, please click here to send her an email.

Thank you Shelli for your enormous contributions to the Breakthrough T1D Southern Nevada Chapter!
