A pump. A sensor. A quick glance at a number.<\/p>\n<p>But for Alex, T1D has never been something you wear. It is something you carry.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s a lot more than wearing a pump and sensor. It\u2019s constant and we never get breaks or time off of taking care of a disease.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong>The day everything changed<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Alex was diagnosed at 6, and what stays with her is not just the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/t1d-basics\/diagnosis\/\">diagnosis<\/a>, but the days leading up to it, when her body was clearly telling her something was wrong and she could not explain why.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhen I was diagnosed I was 6. But one thing I remember most about that time is the sick part. I remember constantly not feeling good but unable to tell why. Eventually it led to a diagnosis of T1D and me being life flighted to a hospital in Phoenix. I learned I was put into a drug induced coma, and that I had T1D and would need to learn how to take care of it all.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It is the kind of beginning that changes how you move through the world. Suddenly, safety depends on knowledge. Health depends on preparation. And normal moments become moments you have to plan for.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-16757\" src=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/desertwest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/120\/2026\/02\/alex-e1771009396805.jpg\" alt=\"Alex with Her Portable Insulin Pump\" width=\"382\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/desertwest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/120\/2026\/02\/alex-e1771009396805.jpg 528w, https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/desertwest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/120\/2026\/02\/alex-e1771009396805-291x300.jpg 291w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 382px) 100vw, 382px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What T1D really looks like<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Most people do not think about blood sugar before running errands. Alex does, because with T1D, \u201cordinary\u201d can turn risky fast.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cDaily life for me with T1D is always checking what my levels are before any task, even if it\u2019s grocery shopping, or driving to a doctors appointment, I almost always have to know what my glucose levels are. If I don\u2019t it could become dangerous. So I check more than I probably should out of caution. And I prep for every possible what if and I prep if the backups or supplies don\u2019t work.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That is what many people never see, the constant calculating, the extra steps, the mental load that follows you into every room and every plan.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-16751\" src=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/desertwest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/120\/2026\/02\/alex3.jpg\" alt=\"Alex at a Baseball Game\" width=\"318\" height=\"424\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/desertwest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/120\/2026\/02\/alex3.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/desertwest\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/120\/2026\/02\/alex3-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 318px) 100vw, 318px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>More than T1D<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Alex is also someone who finds joy in the steady, the creative, and the meaningful. She loves reading, crafting, God, traveling, and DIY furniture restoration.<\/p>\n<p>What makes her happiest is \u201crainy days, a cup of cocoa and a great book!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That picture matters. Because the goal is not just to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/daily-management\/\">manage T1D<\/a>.
