El licor puro no suele contener carbohidratos pero a menudo se mezcla con jugos de fruta muy dulces, refrescos o aditivos si es aromatizado. Esto significa que puedes necesitar m\u00e1s insulina para ciertas bebidas alcoh\u00f3licas que para otras. Tu h\u00edgado detendr\u00e1 sus otras funciones habituales -como liberar peque\u00f1as cantidades de glucosa cada hora- mientras se centra en procesar el alcohol que has bebido. Cuanto m\u00e1s bebes, m\u00e1s trabajo tiene que hacer tu h\u00edgado. Esto aumenta el riesgo de hipoglucemia (bajo nivel de glucosa en sangre) en las horas posteriores a la ingesti\u00f3n porque la producci\u00f3n natural de glucosa de tu cuerpo puede descender repentinamente. Si no has reducido tus dosis de insulina, esa insulina extra puede provocar hipoglucemia cuando est\u00e1s dormido y potencialmente intoxicado. Considera la posibilidad de programar alarmas y recordatorios para comprobar tus niveles de glucosa en sangre o tomar el medicamento nocturno (como la dosis de insulina de acci\u00f3n prolongada antes de acostarte). Tal vez quieras recordatorios para despertarte m\u00e1s tarde por la noche para comprobar tu nivel de glucosa en sangre y otro para por la ma\u00f1ana. Esto significa que deber\u00e1s ser muy cuidadoso al dosificar la insulina para esos carbohidratos a fin de evitar la hipoglucemia. Tambi\u00e9n puedes programar una tasa basal temporal para las horas posteriores a la ingesti\u00f3n, para evitar la hipoglucemia mientras duermes. Si has consumido una gran cantidad de alcohol, los tratamientos de emergencia con glucag\u00f3n pueden no ser tan eficaces porque tu h\u00edgado est\u00e1 centrado en eliminar el alcohol de tu cuerpo.
