35 Faces of the Breakthrough T1D One Walk: Meet Shane

35 Faces, 35 years of Walking, 35 Reasons to Give

Hi! My name is Shane. I am 8 years old and was recently diagnosed with type one diabetes (T1D) on April 1, 2016. I wish it had been a April Fools’ Day joke! We were getting ready to go out of town for spring break and I couldn’t stop drinking water. My mom knew something was wrong and quickly took me to the doctor. After the nurse ran several tests, she checked my blood sugar and asked me if I felt funny or strange. I did feel a little different than I normally did. My blood sugar level was 441! The doctor and nurse told my Mom to immediately take me to Scottish Rite. I was scared and confused because I didn’t know what was going on and what T1D was. I am lucky my Mom is so strong and was able to help me feel better! After I was diagnosed, we attended the Breakthrough T1D One Walk Kick Off in July. We had so much fun! I am excited to be walking this year. My team name is Shane’s Soldier and our goal is to raise $500! It is going to be so much fun having all my friends and family walk with me. I hope people will learn that I can still do all the things I like – T1D doesn’t stand in my way!
