November is National Diabetes Awareness Month

in

Great opportunities abound in November to promote T1D awareness.  The Advocacy Committee has prepared a Diabetes Awareness Month Proclamation that can be shared with your local government authority (City Council, County Council, etc.) asking them to proclaim November 14 as World Diabetes Day in your area. Some municipalities are willing to light buildings blue or turn fountains blue in honor of this celebrate day.

If you are interested in making this happen in your area, please contact one of Advocacy Team Co-Chairs: Carmen Ashley (carmen_ashley@hotmail.com) or Alice Dorn (alicemillerdorn@gmail.com).  They would be glad to provide you with all the information you need.

The 411: Special Diabetes Program

The Special Diabetes Program (SDP) is the crucial government program funding the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Type 1 diabetes research.  Designating $150 million per year, the SDP money is vital to the cure and prevention of Type 1 diabetes.  The bill expires on September 30, 2019.  In the last two weeks, the Senate and the House of Representatives have both passed resolutions extending this funding through November 21, 2019.  Breakthrough T1D sent out Action Alerts to all active advocates to thank their US Senators and Representatives for this extension.  The SDP will need to be renewed in its entirety when the budget for the US is approved in Washington.  If you didn’t get the Action Alerts, please follow this link to sign up to be advocate so you don’t miss other great opportunities to participate in letting Washington hear your voice on all matters concerning Type 1 diabetes.  It only takes a minute but makes a huge impact!  Use these links to say thanks to Senators Perdue and Isakson as well your US Representative for their support of SDP funding.
