{"id":8935,"date":"2022-04-28T15:35:15","date_gmt":"2022-04-28T15:35:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/midatlantic\/?p=8935"},"modified":"2026-04-30T01:56:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-30T01:56:08","slug":"community-volunteer-award-recipients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/greaterdc\/2022\/04\/28\/community-volunteer-award-recipients\/","title":{"rendered":"Community Volunteer Award Recipients"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last month we celebrated National Volunteer Week (April 18 \u2013 22).\u00a0 We celebrated you and your tremendous contributions that demonstrate what it means to be <em>All for (Type) One.<\/em>\u00a0 These past two years have been challenging, but we\u2019ve seen your commitment shine through, moving us closer to a world without T1D.\u00a0 Your involvement with our galas, walks, ride, advocacy and outreach programs shows this dedication.\u00a0 Your unwavering commitment and passion have fueled all of the progress we\u2019ve seen this past year, and we are so grateful for YOU and your partnership.\u00a0 Thank you for all that you do for Breakthrough T1D and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/t1d-community\/\">T1D community<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is also a time when we recognize our Community Volunteer Award recipients for the Mid-Atlantic chapter.\u00a0 The Community Volunteer Award recognizes chapter volunteers whose contributions of time and talent have significantly impacted their local community and advanced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/\">Breakthrough T1D\u2019s<\/a> mission.\u00a0 Our recipients have made noteworthy contributions to chapter programs and\/or operations during the past fiscal year.<\/p>\n<p>Please join us in congratulating your fellow volunteers and this year\u2019s Community Volunteer Award recipients listed below:<\/p>\n<p><strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/midatlantic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/60\/2022\/04\/Picture6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-8944\" src=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/midatlantic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/60\/2022\/04\/Picture6.jpg\" alt=\"Mimi Taylor\" width=\"132\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/greaterdc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/160\/2022\/04\/Picture6.jpg 678w, https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/greaterdc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/160\/2022\/04\/Picture6-212x300.jpg 212w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 132px) 100vw, 132px\" \/><\/a>Mimi Taylo<\/strong><strong>r <\/strong>has been engaged with Breakthrough T1D for 18 years.\u00a0 She has made contributions in advocacy and through the Ride and Gala programs.\u00a0 In her current role as a member of the Grassroots Leadership Team (GLT), she organizes and coordinates meetings for all the chapter\u2019s advocacy meetings. She builds a team of volunteers and helps guide them through the process to ensure successful meetings with Members of Congress.\u00a0 Her passion and devotion towards all things Breakthrough T1D have deeply impacted our community, helping advance critical advocacy initiatives.\u00a0 She helps to secure legislative support for continued federal government funding of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/explore-research\/\">T1D research<\/a> in addition to influencing regulatory and health policies that benefit the Breakthrough T1D community.\u00a0 Mimi says \u201c<strong><em>\u201cI volunteer at Breakthrough T1D because <\/em><\/strong><em>I want to make a difference in the lives of those living with T1D. My son Justin was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/t1d-basics\/diagnosis\/\">diagnosed with T1D<\/a> in 2004, at the age of 16. I turned to Breakthrough T1D and began volunteering at\u00a0<\/em><em>my local\u00a0<\/em><em>chapter and was drawn to Advocacy. It gave me the opportunity to engage with lawmakers to help ensure federal funding for T1D research continues, and also to communicate important issues regarding T1D, all which help improve the quality of life of those with T1D and give hope for a cure.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/midatlantic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/60\/2022\/04\/Picture5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-8943\" src=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/midatlantic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/60\/2022\/04\/Picture5.jpg\" alt=\"Tim Burkett\" width=\"158\" height=\"211\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/greaterdc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/160\/2022\/04\/Picture5.jpg 329w, https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/greaterdc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/160\/2022\/04\/Picture5-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 158px) 100vw, 158px\" \/><\/a>Tim Burkett <\/strong>has been engaged with Breakthrough T1D for more than 8 years.\u00a0 He has made contributions as a Maryland Community Board member, Volunteer Task Force member, Walk, Gala and TypeOneNation Summits.\u00a0 In Tim\u2019s current role as a Maryland&#8217;s Community Board member he has educated the Board on the progress of Breakthrough T1D\u2019s research portfolio.\u00a0 He has a strong knowledge of Breakthrough T1D\u2019s mission and can clearly articulate the impact funding research is making toward improving lives and curing T1D.\u00a0 Notably, the chapter depends on him to fill important roles such as a Summit moderator.\u00a0 In this role he leads by example within our community, explaining how Breakthrough T1D\u2019s work has positively impacted his life, as well as his daughter\u2019s, with incredible technology advancements.
