In January 2000, two childhood friends, Rich Noonan and John Hurley, teamed up to create and organize a road race to raise money for diabetes awareness. Although neither of them have diabetes, both had sisters who did. John’s sister Shannon passed away in 1995 due to diabetic complications and the race is held in Shannon’s memory. Rich’s sister, Patty, had diabetes for 38 years prior to becoming diabetes free after a pancreas transplant. Although Patty is now diabetes free, she had endured many complications over the years, including: two kidney transplants, cataract surgeries, and a bout of breast cancer. This race is held to honor Patty’s courage and the courage of those who face the daily difficulties while living with diabetes.
Proceeds generated from this event will benefit Breakthrough T1D. With your support and generosity we will create awareness in the community and help Breakthrough T1D progressively remove the impact of type 1 diabetes (T1D) from people’s lives until no one has to fear developing this disease. By joining Team Breakthrough T1D, you’ll raise money to help fund critical T1D research and create a world without T1D.
