While ever-improving technology and faster and better insulins have made living with T1D easier over the last decade, the ultimate goal is curing this disease. Multiple clinical trials focused on cures are underway at all stages of T1D, from very early stages to established T1D.<\/p>\n<p>For those already living with an established diagnosis of T1D, stem cell research is making promising progress. Vertex is currently conducting two trials using stem cell-derived islet cells:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>FORWARD STUDY (also known as VX-880): In the FORWARD study, people with T1D with impaired hypoglycemic awareness and severe hypoglycemic events received an infusion of stem cell-derived islet cells along with immunosuppressive therapy. At the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Conference in June 2024, Vertex reported in an <a href=\"https:\/\/news.vrtx.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/vertex-announces-positive-results-ongoing-phase-12-study-vx-880\">update<\/a> that all 12 participants who received a single full dose infusion achieved a HbA1c below 7.0%, time-in-range above 70%, and no severe hypoglycemic events. Eleven of the 12 participants had either reduced or complete elimination of insulin injections. Of the three patients who passed the one-year mark following treatment, all achieved and maintained insulin independence. Vertex is now expanding trial enrollment to a total of 37 patients. This trial is currently recruiting in California, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Wisconsin, as well as across Canada and Europe. Travel may be reimbursed. Click <a href=\"https:\/\/880.t1dstudy.com\/\">here for the FORWARD Study<\/a> for more information and to see if you qualify.<\/li>\n<li>UPWARD STUDY (also known as VX-264): In the UPWARD study, the stem-cell derived islet cells are encapsulated, which protects them from the recipient\u2019s immune system without the need for immunosuppressants. Since this intervention does not require the use of immunosuppressants, it carries less risk and is potentially useful for many more people living with T1D. This trial is currently recruiting in Chicago, Boston and Philadelphia. Travel may be reimbursed.
