Day 23 – Meet Chris
On November 11, 2009 my life flipped upside down. I was diagnosed with T1D, a month before my thirteenth birthday. It was at this moment that I had to learn who my true friends were. The ones who stayed with me and didn’t think they could “catch” T1D from me were the ones that I know will be my friends for a lifetime.
There are some good things that came out of having T1D. It has taught me perseverance, as I will not let T1D ever hold me back from doing anything that I want to do. I am an assistant captain for my varsity ice hockey team, play travel roller hockey and race in motocross. I am a youth ambassador for Breakthrough T1D and also a youth camp counselor for the James Sweeney Diabetes Kids camp.
One obstacle that I faced was trying to get in a pattern of testing regularly. It is something that I wish I didn’t have to do, especially when it’s more than 10 times a day. I have improved over the past few years and it has gotten easier. Breakthrough T1D has been there since day 1 for me. I have a place to turn to whenever I (or my family) have questions and need help. Thanks to Breakthrough T1D, we feel part of a family that believes that someday there will be a cure.
