We wanted to wait until delivery to know for sure. In life,\u00a0we\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0get many miracles, but we were blessed with one, a little baby girl on August 13th, 2021.\u00a0She was absolutely perfect!\u00a0\u00a0 As life is always filled with highs and lows, we hit a speed bump a short two years later when Harlow started getting sick. We took her to the doctor\u00a0numerous\u00a0times and were always sent home saying it was\u00a0probably a\u00a0virus,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0\u201cthat time of year\u201d and it should go away soon. Although she was freshly potty trained, Harlow started wetting the bed.\u00a0She began asking us numerous times a day to fill up her princess water bottle.\u00a0She\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0losing weight, but\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0gaining it either, like a growing child should be. She\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0want to play with her brother anymore, and she was\u00a0exhausted in\u00a0minutes.\u00a0We knew something\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0right.\u00a0 After researching, we took her back to the doctor and had them do more tests.\u00a0I\u2019ll\u00a0never forget the\u00a0nurse's\u00a0face when she\u00a0came\u00a0back into that room. She looked like she had seen a\u00a0ghost\u00a0and I\u00a0immediately\u00a0knew something\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0right. We went straight to Children\u2019s Mercy. When we got there, we were filled with emotions and soon learned our lives were going to\u00a0be changed\u00a0forever.\u00a0Blood sugars of 863, DKA, and doctors shocked she\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0unconscious.\u00a0It was a whirlwind of\u00a0a night\u00a0to say the least.\u00a0 These last two years have been filled with many of the hardships of this disease. We know T1D\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0define her, but she will have challenges ahead. Being a smart little girl is a blessing, it also comes with her asking us,\u00a0\u201cWhy do I have to have diabetes?\u201d and \u201cCan you take away my diabetes?\u201d\u00a0There are days\u00a0where\u00a0I constantly watch her phone while she goes out to play with friends, trying to just be a normal kid paired with nights of staying wide awake worrying. Every night is a battle to balance hormones, emotions, and everything in between.\u00a0 Now that you know a little bit of our story, I want to share why we sought out our second family, Breakthrough T1D.\u00a0This organization is a lifeline for us, the second miracle in our journey.\u00a0An organization that is laser focused on breakthrough research,\u00a0advocacy\u00a0and support for families like ours.
