National Diabetes Awareness Month Spotlight – Teresa Godfrey

in , ,

We’re celebrating another Mover, Shaker and T1D Changemaker in our community to celebrate National Diabetes Awareness Month!

Meet Teresa!

Teresa, would you mind sharing your diagnosis story?

My name is Teresa Godfrey and I am 34 years old.  I was diagnosed with type one diabetes when I was 10 years old.  I had been losing weight, I was  thirsty, having to urinate frequently, and was very lethargic.  My worried parents got me to the pediatrician where I was finally diagnosed.  I then went to the hospital and right away was introduced to Breakthrough T1D.  They made the overwhelming diagnosis easier to handle for my parents and myself.  They were and have continued to be a great support system and wealth of knowledge for type 1 diabetes management.

Thanks for sharing your story Teresa. Everyone’s story is unique and helps remind us why it’s so important to raise awareness about the common signs and symptoms of type 1 diabetes. You mentioned being introduced to Breakthrough T1D. Your family has had an awesome One Walk team too, T’s Team?

My family has participated in the Breakthrough T1D one walk every year since my diagnosis in hopes to raise money to find a cure and advancements in management of the disease until a cure is found.  The management of the disease has changed over the past 20+ years for me from multiple finger pricks a day and drawing up insulin from a syringe multiple times a day to now wearing a continuous glucose monitor and no longer pricking my finger and using an insulin pump and no more shots.  I am so thankful for these advancements that have helped me to stay healthy.

That’s great! T1D technology and care has definitely come a long way, but even with all the technology advances it can still be a lot to manage. What is one T1D accomplishment your are most proud of?

My greatest accomplishments during my many years with type 1 diabetes is having 2 healthy pregnancies with good diabetes control thanks to the devices mentioned above and a great care team.  I am blessed to say I am pregnant again with our third child and have had a healthy pregnancy thus far again.  I continue to thank Breakthrough T1D for all of their help and support over the years and continue to cheer on all those with type one diabetes – you got this!

That’s an incredible accomplishment and congratulations!

Thank you so much Teresa for sharing your story as part of our National Diabetes Awareness Month celebrations. Being a T1D Champion everyday is what makes everyone in our community a Mover, Shaker and T1D Changemaker.
