EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS)– Mid-Michiganders leading the fight to end juvenile diabetes kicked off a key campaign Wednesday with the help of bagels, eggs, potatoes, bacon and sausage.
Board members from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation joined event chairs, a football coach and others for a breakfast to prepare for the annual Breakthrough T1D One Walk.
“This is the day that we come and we try to inspire our teams and our captains and our individual walkers to come out and get ready, register [and] start to raise funds,” said Kate Durak, executive director of the Metro Detroit/Southeast Michigan chapter of Breakthrough T1D.
Breakthrough T1D board member Ron Dooley says the Breakthrough T1D One Walk started as a grassroots effort in the Lansing-East Lansing area. Since then, it’s evolved into a community event bringing thousands of people together for one cause.
“It’s grown dramatically,” adds Dooley.
Organizers expect to raise approximately $400,000 for diabetes research through this year’s walk.
