Royal Oak/Madison Heights Lead Maria Haywood manages the group comprised of people of all ages with T1D and their families. The group encourages members from Royal Oak, Troy, Berkley, Madison Heights and surrounding areas to come together once a month to engage in discussions with other T1D families on every aspect of living with the disease and beyond.

Said Haywood, “This is a place where T1D families at any stage of the disease can get acquainted with other T1D families and provide one another the support to get through the adjustments and challenges that the disease brings.”

Upon the group’s inception, members would meet at local coffee shops or at the McDonald’s Playplace in Berkley and Royal Oak. As the number of participating families continues to increase throughout the years, the group has evolved to meet at larger facilities, including AirTime Trampoline & Game Park in Troy and local bowling alleys. Additionally, Haywood has incorporated guest speakers into the mix to provide families the opportunity to hear from expert leaders on key T1D research and topics.

“A lot of friendships are formed,” Haywood added.

The group also is active on a closed Facebook group: Breakthrough T1D Group Royal Oak/Madison Heights Area. The online forum’s focus is to provide support, friendship, information and events for parents and children who are currently living with T1D, and to one day, help find a cure.
