The total dollars raised for type 1 diabetes (T1D) research in East Lansing was over $375,000 in 2016!  This fantastic result would not have been possible without the tremendous support of our community.  Our goal this year is to raise $400,000 and I know with your generous support we can hit that goal! What is Type 1 Diabetes (T1D)? T1D is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas.  T1D strikes children and adults suddenly, making them insulin dependent for life and carries the threat of devastating complications such as blindness, kidney failure, amputations, nerve damage, heart attack, stroke, and even death. T1D is a 24/7 battle and never takes a day off. We must find a cure.

As the world’s leading funder of T1D research, Breakthrough T1D has invested nearly $2 billion in scientific research and is currently funding 50 human clinical trials of potential T1D therapies.  Breakthrough T1D has proven to be a great steward of donors’ generous contributions.  They have made significant advances in the past couple of years with therapies such as the artificial pancreas and encapsulation.  At this moment there is a tremendous amount of promising research to cure, treat and prevent T1D which requires a new round of funding. 

I look forward to working together to reach our goal of improving the quality of life for all who suffer from T1D and ultimately turning Type One into Type NONE.
