Movie Theater Gaming Tournament

The Northern Virginia Gaming Group (NOVAGG) is helping create a world without type 1 diabetes (T1D) for the millions of children and adults living with this disease.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults—and has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. With T1D, a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin—a hormone essential to turning food into energy. The daily life of someone with T1D brings a multitude of challenges, including insulin injections that need to be carefully balanced with eating and activity, disruptive glucose monitoring, sleepless nights—and wishing for a tomorrow where this struggle doesn’t exist.

Living with T1D means there are no days off and there is no cure. But there is hope.

By being a donor or a participant in this event, you’ll help fund life-changing breakthroughs to make living with T1D safer and healthier, until there is a cure.

So join us for a family-friendly gaming tournament at a movie theater to support Breakthrough T1D!

Tournament Details

We will be playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the Nintendo Switch, which is scheduled to release the day before the date of the event. One of the new features in this game is an option that prevents a player from driving off the course. So anyone is welcome to compete on the BIG screen!

This tournament is a charity event so all participants are required to raise a minimum of $50 for Breakthrough T1D. Those who raise more than $50 can earn extra race points for the tournament. The more extra race points a participant has, the better chance he/she will have of winning his/her first race and advancing past the first round. Plus, all NOVAGG Meetup members with a paid membership earn twice as many extra race points!

Tournament participants and donors can both attend the tournament. Each participant will receive 1 general admission ticket to give to a donor of his/her choice. A limited amount of additional tickets will be available upon request.

Tournament Rules

Maximum number of participants is 32
To participate, a person must set up a donation page on Team Breakthrough T1D and raise a minimum of $50
Additional money raised will be converted into Extra Race Points (ERP) based on the following scale
1. 1 ERP per $10 up to $100 (i.e. $60 total raised earns 1 ERP, $70 earns 2 ERP, $100 earns 5 ERP)
2. 1 ERP per $20 between $120 and $500 (i.e. $120 total raised earns 6 ERP, $140 earns 7 ERP, $500 earns 20 ERP)
3. 1 ERP per $100 above $500 (i.e. $600 total raised earns 21 ERP, $700 total raised earns 22 ERP)
Members of the NOVAGG Meetup group who have a paid membership earn double ERP
1. 2 ERP per $10 up to $100 (i.e. $60 total raised earns 2 ERP, $70 earns 4 ERP, $100 earns 10 ERP)
2. 2 ERP per $20 between $120 and $500 (i.e. $120 total raised earns 12 ERP, $140 earns 14 ERP, $500 earns 40 ERP)
3. 2 ERP per $100 above $500 (i.e. $600 total raised earns 42 ERP, $700 total raised earns 44 ERP)
Race points are earned by racing in the game. Finishing first earns the most race points, second earns the second most, etc.
During each round, participants will compete in 3 races. At the conclusion of those 3 races, whoever has the most race points plus ERP will advance
All ERP are spent after a participant’s first set of races. So they can only be used in the first round, not the final round
