Rider Spotlight: Allison Courtney – Hy-Vee Corporate Team Rider

What began as a casual pandemic hobby turned into something much more meaningful for Allison. After discovering a love for cycling during COVID and later receiving an email at work about joining the Hy-Vee Corporate Ride Team, she decided to give it a try even though she admits she didn’t fully understand the scope of Breakthrough T1D at the time.

“Fast forward three years,” she says, “and I am beyond honored to ride on behalf of the amazing community of individuals that I quite literally stumbled into.”

From Anxious First Ride to Confident Third

Heading into her first ride, Allison was nervous. “I didn’t know anyone else who was participating,” she recalls. “Nor did I truly know what to expect. It was my first organized large ride.”

But that changed quickly. On the first night, The Minnesota/Dakotas Loons welcomed her to their table and instantly made her feel part of something much bigger. “Now, going into my third ride, I know what everyone means when they talk about ‘THE HILL,’ and I feel truly blessed to help raise money to find a cure and change lives,” she says.

Her experience has also changed her personally. “I now know more than ever what I’m capable of doing and it’s so much more than I ever imagined. It’s empowering to push yourself past what you thought possible.”

The Power of the Ride Community

For Allison, the most surprising part of the Ride has been the people. “You always hear people say bike people are the nicest, and until you join that community, you don’t realize how true it is,” she says. “The individuals in this community are so kind, honest, and want everyone to succeed. It’s not just a ride – it’s the mission. The appreciation for the riders and their families is so genuine.”

That sense of support and connection has been a meaningful part of the experience for Allison. “This chapter has brought a sense of community and provided lifelong friends we couldn’t imagine not having in our lives,” she says. “Even if we’re separated by miles, I know the coaches and team are there to support us in all aspects of life.”

La Crosse Highlights & Ride Traditions

Allison has come to love the La Crosse ride, especially the scenery, the challenge of the course, and The Pearl Ice Cream (a well-earned treat after a long ride!). She also looks forward to one moment in particular each year: “Crossing into Wisconsin and seeing the ‘Welcome to WI’ sign. That’s when you know you’ve ridden through three states and are nearly to the finish. It’s such a great feeling.”

And, of course, the welcome dinner. “It always delivers a powerful message and helps remind everyone why we do this and what we’re accomplishing.”

Looking Ahead

This year, Allison is most excited about spending time with the chapter again and contributing to life-saving research. Her personal goal? “To finish faster than my previous ride time, under seven hours.”

She’s motivated not just by the finish line, but by the recognition and encouragement along the way. “The support means everything,” she says. “From coaches’ messages to a simple like on social media. It all adds up.”

Whether you’re an experienced cyclist or just getting started, the Breakthrough T1D Ride program offers an unforgettable experience rooted in community, challenge, and purpose. Riders like Allison prove that you don’t need a direct connection to T1D to make a meaningful impact. You just need a willingness to show up, push yourself, and support a cause that’s changing lives.
