What began as a personal health goal, getting into road biking, quickly turned into something much more meaningful. \u201cI started training for the Ride to get healthier and eventually do road racing,\u201d he shared. \u201cOne day, I decided I wanted to do a Breakthrough T1D Ride and set that as my goal. From there, I gave myself a new set of goals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walker says he\u2019s always motivated by the idea of challenging himself, not just for others to see, but to prove to himself what\u2019s possible. \u201cJust because I have diabetes doesn\u2019t mean I can\u2019t do sports that others without diabetes are good at.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/minnesotadakotasnew\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/147\/2025\/07\/walker-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-8902\" src=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/minnesotadakotasnew\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/147\/2025\/07\/walker-3-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"367\" height=\"489\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/minnesotadakotas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/147\/2025\/07\/walker-3-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/minnesotadakotas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/147\/2025\/07\/walker-3.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 367px) 100vw, 367px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>A Father-Son Bond on the Road<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Walker took on his first Ride alongside his dad, a second-time Breakthrough T1D rider. Though the two were already close, sharing the road added a new dimension to their relationship. \u201cWe\u2019re able to challenge each other to make us stronger, and we also have a lot of fun,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>One of his favorite memories from the Ride was the 15-mile section around Hayden Lake. \u201cIt was very quiet and peaceful. And going downhill was so much fun. The speed you build up makes the next climb a little bit easier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/minnesotadakotasnew\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/147\/2025\/07\/walker-4.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-8904\" src=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/minnesotadakotasnew\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/147\/2025\/07\/walker-4-225x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"395\" height=\"527\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/minnesotadakotas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/147\/2025\/07\/walker-4-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/minnesotadakotas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/147\/2025\/07\/walker-4.jpeg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 395px) 100vw, 395px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Advice to Others Living with T1D<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When asked what he would say to others living with T1D who might be unsure about taking on a ride like this, Walker doesn\u2019t hesitate. \u201cGo out and do it! It\u2019s a blast,\u201d he said. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to go all out and do the full 100 miles on your first ride. But if you do want to, definitely train for it a couple months in advance. You get to see some amazing scenery while riding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His message to first-time riders? \u201cTrain and have fun. Don\u2019t worry about your time. Set a goal for how many miles you want to ride and enjoy it.
