Clinical Trials Need You!
in Research
Participating in a clinical trial is a great way to advance research in the future and make a difference right this second. Clinical researchers are trying to answer important questions that will lead to better ways to prevent, treat, and cure disease. This is different from medical care, which is where your doctor is developing a care plan specific for you (based on the results of previous clinical research!). Click here to read more about the basics of clinical trials brought to you by the Breakthrough T1D-Beyond Type 1 Alliance.
Clinical trials may provide an opportunity to access new medical advances and in some cases, participants are able to continue the therapy after the end of the trial if it’s found to be effective. Participants also receive free, quality care at top facilities throughout the trial.
Still not sure about clinical trials? Read more from Breakthrough T1D Mountain West Chapter’s Clinical Trial Engagement Volunteer Meredith Coors who shares more about her family’s experience:
- Why did your son Peter initially get involved in clinical trials? Peter was diagnosed at 11 and participated in Breakthrough T1D Children’s Congress within a year of diagnosis. He learned early on the importance of research and better technology, and so he was eager to participate in trials that could help both him and the community. He also liked the idea of being paid!
- Was it hard to convince him to participate? It wasn’t hard to convince Peter to participate, the main challenge was finding time between school and activities when he could participate.
- Was your experience generally negative or positive? We’ve had very positive experiences in the trials we have participated in. We’ve done both a drug trial and a device safety trial. Our other children have participated in TrialNet and ASK.
- What do you wish you’d known before participating in a clinical trial? It’s important to know the parameters of a study and what is expected of you and your time, make sure you are available on the dates needed and be sure you can commit!
- What would you say to someone considering participating? Go for it! It’s exciting to participate in research that can improve lives and lead to a cure for T1D!
