Why the Community Summit Matters<\/h3>\n

A type 1 diabetes (T1D) diagnosis can change everything in an instant. One day you are suddenly trying to learn an entirely new language of numbers, devices, food decisions, and constant what-ifs. For many people, the hardest part is not only the information overload, but the feeling that you are navigating it alone.<\/p>\n

That is why the free Breakthrough T1D Community Summit<\/a> exists. It brings the T1D community together for learning, support, and real connection.<\/p>\n

Teri’s Experience<\/h3>\n

As I approach my two-year diaversary this coming April, I can\u2019t help but reflect on my journey as a person living with type 1 diabetes.<\/p>\n

Like many, I was thrown into this new lifestyle quite suddenly\u2014thrust into a world of unknowns and the fears that come with a new diagnosis. My hospital experience and first visit to the pharmacy did little to instill confidence in what I was supposed to be doing or how to manage what lay ahead. So I did what I do best: I researched.<\/p>\n

My husband and I were already familiar with fundraising and support organizations through our shared experience with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, so I assumed there must be similar resources for people living with type 1 diabetes. Knowing I was in over my head and needing support while waiting to see an endocrinologist and diabetes educator, I began searching for both information and community.<\/p>\n

Online, I found the American Diabetes Association and Breakthrough T1D. Initially, I wasn\u2019t sure Breakthrough T1D was for me\u2014like many people, I had long associated the organization (formerly JDRF) primarily with children and families. Still, I signed up for newsletters, checked the boxes for advocacy and events, and hoped for the best.<\/p>\n

Just a few weeks later, I learned about an upcoming Summit with speakers and vendors. The timing couldn\u2019t have been better.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

At the Summit, I attended educational sessions, spoke with vendors, and gathered valuable information. I also met another adult living with type 1\u2014someone who has since become a friend I now see socially. Not long after, an Adult Connection group<\/a> was formed, meeting monthly, and a small group of us gradually became friends. That group continues to grow, and I deeply value the conversations we share\u2014whether while volunteering or simply spending time together at organized events and meetups.<\/p>\n

In the end, the Summit provided more than the initial information and resources I was seeking as a newly diagnosed adult with type 1. It led to connection, community, and lasting friendships with people who truly understand this life. I am grateful for the local Breakthrough T1D chapter and all they do to support our community\u2014and grateful that I checked that box to attend the Summit as I began navigating my new normal with type 1 diabetes.<\/p>\n

What to Expect at the Community Summit<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Breakthrough T1D Community Summit<\/a> brings together the local T1D community. You will learn about research advancements, participate in discussions with experts, meet others living with T1D in keynote and breakout sessions, and connect with national and local diabetes vendor partners. The Community Summit is there for every person impacted by T1D, all ages and stages. Breakout sessions will be available for adults, teens, children, parents, caregivers, newly diagnosed, and those with years of T1D experience.\u00a0Registration includes access to all these wonderful opportunities, including a continental breakfast, snacks, and lunch.<\/p>\n
