{"id":8628,"date":"2022-01-11T14:36:51","date_gmt":"2022-01-11T14:36:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/newjerseymetro\/?p=8628"},"modified":"2025-10-02T19:31:26","modified_gmt":"2025-10-02T19:31:26","slug":"remember-carol-franco","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/newjersey\/2022\/01\/11\/remember-carol-franco\/","title":{"rendered":"Remembering Carol Franco"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On November 15, 2021, we lost a great member of our T1D community, Carol Franco, who with her husband, were instrumental in founding a local Breakthrough T1D chapter in 1973.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-8630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/newjerseymetro\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/112\/2022\/01\/Carol-Franco.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/newjersey\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/126\/2022\/01\/Carol-Franco.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/newjersey\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/126\/2022\/01\/Carol-Franco-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Franco Family\u2019s story begins like many we\u2019ve heard before, excessive thirst, frequent urination, insatiable appetite, and flu like symptoms. However, in 1973, his pediatrician didn\u2019t have the tools needed to test then 2-year-old, Christopher Franco\u2019s, blood sugar. His mother, Carol, took him to the hospital where she was told that Christopher was in peril. Her concerns about diabetes being the cause were dismissed until she demanded her son be tested. <strong>Carol saved her son\u2019s life that day<\/strong>. But their T1D story doesn\u2019t end there. 17 years later, Carol and Salvatore\u2019s oldest son, Michael, was diagnosed at 25. In the years between the two diagnoses, the Francos attended a Breakthrough T1D event in Philadelphia, founded the Rockland County Chapter of Breakthrough T1D just 4 months later, built a community for their sons, and started a legacy that we are so proud to share today.<\/p>\n<p>Carol Franco fought tirelessly in pursuit of Breakthrough T1D\u2019s mission to improve the lives of her son\u2019s and all those affected by diabetes.
