Diwali and Diabetes

We are pleased to share some thoughts from our chapter member Shilpi about Diwali! Shilpi plans to be at the One Walk at Rutgers this coming Sunday, October 22nd. Come join us as we walk to turn Type One into Type None!

Diwali is the biggest festival for Hindus across the globe. It’s also called the Festival of Lights and is celebrated for five days. Each of the 5 days has a special significance. Diwali is all about fun, enjoyment, good food and sharing love and warmth with family and friends.

During Diwali, we light diyas and candles around the house, make colorful Rangolis, eat Mithai (sweets) and light firecrackers. We also have grand feasts with delicious food that includes different varieties of Mithai as the special attraction of the occasion. It is very easy to indulge in those amazing celebration sweets and snacks during the festivities.

This festive period can shake your healthy eating and blood sugar controls regime. Moderation is the key for this beautiful 5 day festival.

Carb counting for these special Mithais can be a challenge as there is a huge variety available and each preparation is different. I’ve included some of the carb counts, these are approximate and would vary based on size and preparation but can be a guideline and help all of our community to enjoy this wonderful festival with peace of mind.

HAPPY DIWALI!!!!!
