Meet our T1D Champion, Brittany Carroll! Brittany has lived with T1D for 21 years. Read her full story below!

“Hi! My name is Brittany and I have had T1d for 21 years. Diabetes and I got off to a terrible start. For 3 months leading up to diagnosis my mom thought I either had an eating disorder or the flu because every time I ate, I would get sick. While skiing in Aspen, Colorado we decided to get me checked out only to find out I was in kidney and liver failure, DKA and had a blood sugar of 1800.

While type 1 diabetes is a pain and I long for the day of a cure, I am so grateful for the advancements that have been made towards management and a cure. I’ve had multiple CGM’s, pumps, and tried different insulins until I found the perfect fit. Today that means insulin via a Tandem pump, a Dexcom CGM, and my best friend Rider who is a Diabetic Alert Dog. He takes great care of me and I am so grateful to have him! If you had told me 21 years ago that a dog was going to alert me to my blood sugars and save me from highs and lows-I wouldn’t have believed you.

I love bringing awareness to people about T1d and why we need a cure but I also make it a mission to educate people on the signs and symptoms so they can hopefully avoid the issues that I had. I hate T1d  and I can’t wait for a cure; but until then I want to spread hope and awareness to help others who live with this disease. While my highs and lows may slow me down, they don’t keep me from perusing my dreams which most recently includes racing with Ferrari Challenge!”
