By day, Mike Fox is a commercial real estate broker with CBRE specializing in tenant representation for nonprofit organizations. But outside of work this spring, Mike endured a rigorous training program to attempt the impossible – escape from Alcatraz! On June 10, along with 2,000 triathletes from around the world, he became a fugitive for Breakthrough T1D by swimming 1.5 miles through the frigid waters of the Bay from “The Rock” to the shore, followed by an 18-mile bike ride and 8-mile run.
Not only can Mike now add ability to break out of a maximum security prison on his resume, but he also raised $3,800 for Breakthrough T1D. Those funds will help accelerate critical research to cure, better treat and prevent type 1 diabetes (T1D). What an achievement!
A native of Washington DC with degrees from Vanderbilt University and Georgetown University, Mike has lived and worked in the Bay Area for 10 years. He plans to do the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon again. He says, “The most memorable moment of the day was seeing my daughter on the beach as I emerged from the Bay in full wetsuit, looking at me like I was a crazy man!” He powered through the rest of the race and Breakthrough T1D could not be prouder of him. Congratulations Mike!
