As part of our Ambassador Program for the 2012 Walk to Cure Diabetes, 11-year old David is among nine extraordinary young people who will assist Breakthrough T1D in educating the community about what it is like living with type 1 diabetes (T1D). The Ambassadors will attend the Walk Kick Off events this summer and of course, the Walk to Cure Diabetes in all four locations around the Bay Area in the month of October 2012. On June 20, MUG Root Beer Float Day with the Oakland A’s was a terrific success, partly due to the appearance of several Ambassadors. David wrote about his experience:

“At the Oakland Athletics Breakthrough T1D Kickoff I thought it was really super cool that I was able to participate in such a fun event. I think that it went really well and it was awesome that we were able to raise so much money in root beer floats – $24,000 of sales to help find a cure! I hope that I was able to help make a lot more people aware of type one diabetes. I thought it was really special that I was able to share what my life is like with other people. There were so many other people I met that also had type one. I met lots of other kids with type one and even got to play catch with some of them. My favorite part was definitely when I was able to run on the field with the Oakland Athletics and got to meet some of the players. I really had lots of fun and feel that this first Walk Kick Off was really successful. I think that all of the money we raised and all the people that we made aware of type one will help find a cure. I thought it was a great experience and would love to be an ambassador at other events in the future.

The Oakland A’s Kick Off was such a success and I hope that other Breakthrough T1D events will be just as successful too. I am looking forward to all of the events because they are all fun. Some of my favorite Breakthrough T1D events are the Mazda Raceway Walk and the Oakland Athletics Kick Off where I participated as an Ambassador. To me the Walk to Cure Diabetes is really important because it raises lots of money to find a cure. One day if there were a cure that would mean, for me, my sister and lots and lots of other people not having to live with the worries of diabetes.”
