Walk season is upon us and so we turn our attention to Susan Mohr, our VP of Walk to Cure Diabetes. She brings a dynamic spirit to this role, as she encourages people to become excited about participating. Her goal is to increase fundraising while also ensuring that everyone enjoys a beautiful day and connects with other people who live with T1D.
Susan has been passionately involved with Breakthrough T1D since her son Daniel was diagnosed with T1D twelve years ago at age seven. She remembers that the Walk to Cure Diabetes was a haven for her family at the time. She says, “We were so relieved to meet families like ours, who were going through the same thing. Entering through the bright balloon arch that welcomed us to our very first Walk was like having the sun come out after a long stretch of rainy weather.”
Susan started volunteering on the Walk Committee ten years ago and has chaired it for the last five years. Her son came up with the name for their family team “Daniel’s Diabetes Destroyers.” As they approach their twelfth year walking, Susan reflects, “Walk Season is here, and it is always a bittersweet time for our family. We think about life before–and after diagnosis, but we always feel recharged and optimistic about a future without T1D as we receive support and encouragement from our family and friends. Our family is so inspired by all of the families who walk with us, and the amazing Breakthrough T1D volunteers and staff. The Walk brings all of us together to celebrate our courage and our hope for the day there is a cure.”
