Hello Breakthrough T1D Walkers!
It’s just May, but I’m already in the walk mood and I’m eager to get you in the walk mood, too. Sure, the walks are still several months away in October, but the fun starts on June 26 with our first walk kickoff event at the Oakland A’s MUG Root Beer Float Day.
But let me back up a bit. I’m Zoe Francis, and I’m thrilled to be the family team leader for the 2013 Walk to Cure Diabetes. Our oldest daughter, Hannah, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 1998 when she was just 5 years old. We did our first walk that year, and we’ve been walking every year since then. And we’ll keep walking until there’s a cure.
My goal as family team leader is to keep you informed and keep you excited about this year’s Walk to Cure Diabetes. You’ll be getting monthly e-mails from me starting in June and lasting right up until the walk dates in October.
Breakthrough T1D has four really cool walk kickoffs to get you geared up for walk season. It’s a great way to get registered early for the walk and get a jump-start on your fundraising. It’s also a fun way to get involved and meet other families dealing with type 1 diabetes.

This year’s four Bay Area walks will be held one each Sunday in October. Please click here for details about the four walks. Choose the one that best matches what you’re looking for in a walk.
If you have a creative fundraising idea that’s worked well for your walk team, please drop me a note at zoe.francis@me.com. I’d sure like to share those stories with our other walkers.
I’m also pleased to announce our 2013 Walk Chairs: Susan Mohr, Breakthrough T1D Bay Area’s VP of Walk to Cure Diabetes, for the Walk at California’s Great America; Sandra Silvestri for the Walk at Lovers Point; Cindy Koenigsberg & Susan Dillinger for the Walk at the Oakland Zoo; and Kevin O’Scanlon for the Walk at the Great Meadow at Fort Mason. Sandi Eason, Senior Vice President of UnionBank, and Ty Lee, Vice President, US Marketing & Customer Service, will be our Corporate Recruitment Chairs this year. We are so grateful for their hard work.
I look forward to working with all of you to make this year’s Walk to Cure Diabetes our best walks ever!
Zoe Francis
