It’s the small stuff that is weighing heavy for me. I have a pharmacy, but I have no idea how to get to it yet. I have to arrange for my pump supplies to be shipped to school, but I also need to have a supply at home for breaks. I need to make sure I have all my prescriptions ready to go, even the ones I forget about like glucagon and Zofran. These are the things that have been on my mom’s To Do list that are now moving to mine.
I have been blessed with an amazing group of friends in high school who are comfortable with type 1 and have never been shy about asking questions, learning about the disease or eating my glucose tabs from my car supply. I know it will take time to create those friendships again, and it takes courage and patience to put it all out there with a new group of people.
I am excited to make new friends and live on my own, but I also know the responsibility for managing my disease belongs to me.
I am really lucky that I have a great doctor who has taught me what I need to know and given me the confidence to take the next step. I have support from home and from organizations like Breakthrough T1D and DYF, and I feel ready. I leave for college in 18 days and could not be more excited!
