Breakthrough T1D One World is a virtual world built inside the popular online game Roblox that allows for education, celebration and, of course, play! It was created by Breakthrough T1D Game2Give in partnership with people in the video game industry who have T1D connections.

Breakthrough T1D One World launched on November 1, 2020 in honor of National Diabetes Awareness Month. As of August 2021, more than 189,000 people have visited the world and learned about Breakthrough T1D’s mission through the game.

On June 18, 2021, in partnership with Breakthrough T1D UK, we launched a big UK-themed update. Join us in Breakthrough T1D One World to visit famous landmarks like Stonehenge and Big Ben, play minigames like Parkour and Trivia Tug of War, complete a scavenger hunt, and join the dance party in the exclusive V1P tent!

What is Breakthrough T1D One World?

Breakthrough T1D One World is a virtual world built for the popular online game platform Roblox. It’s a place where people in the Breakthrough T1D community—kids and adults—can get together, play games, learn about type 1 diabetes (T1D), and hang out with old friends or meet new ones.

What is Roblox?

Roblox is a global game platform where millions of people gather every day in virtual worlds created by Roblox users. It’s the #1 game platform for kids and teens and an excellent way for kids to learn how to make games.

Why did Breakthrough T1D build a world inside a video game?

Since 2019, we’ve been exploring potential partnerships with the video game industry through our Breakthrough T1D Game2Give initiative. Video games are increasingly popular with people of all ages, and a lot of those people just happen to have T1D! In less than two years of fundraising, Breakthrough T1D Game2Give has already raised more than $1.1M through this community, while also spreading T1D awareness and supporting people who live with T1D in fun new ways.

When COVID-19 hit and in-person events like Breakthrough T1D One Walk had to be reimagined, the Breakthrough T1D Game2Give team jumped at the opportunity to provide a walk-like experience inside a video game—and Breakthrough T1D One World was born! We’ve had a lot of fun putting this together with the Roblox team and our game development partner Melon Development, and we can’t wait for you to explore it!

Why Roblox and not another online game like Fortnite?

Of all the online games we could have partnered with, we chose Roblox for several reasons: it’s family friendly, it’s free to play on a variety of devices, and it’s a platform specifically designed for building virtual spaces like Breakthrough T1D One World.

How do I access Breakthrough T1D One World?

To get there, visit this page and click the Play button. If you haven’t played a Roblox game before, you’ll be prompted to download and install the Roblox app the first time.

Do Roblox or Breakthrough T1D One World cost money?

No, both Roblox and Breakthrough T1D One World are free to play. If you want to customize your avatar (character) with different tee shirts, hairstyles, and accessories, you can do this with in-game currency called robux. This does cost money, but it’s completely optional.

What is there to do in Breakthrough T1D One World?

The virtual world will continue to grow and change over time. In June 2021 we launched a UK update that includes famous landmarks, an expanded world to explore, lots of interactive characters to talk to, and plenty of surprises! You can play minigames, complete a scavenger hunt, chat with Aaron Kowalski and Sir Frederick Banting, learn about Breakthrough T1D and T1D, and even dye your virtual hair blue!

Can I bring my non-T1D friends to Breakthrough T1D One World?

Yes, everyone is welcome! One great thing about Roblox is that many of the games on the platform are educational, Breakthrough T1D One World included. We intend for this to be not only a gathering place for the T1D community, but also a place that people can come to learn about T1D. If your kids are missing friends due to school and camp cancellations, Breakthrough T1D One World is a fun place to meet up!

How do I know Breakthrough T1D One World is safe for my kids?

We have designed Breakthrough T1D One World to be a safe place where everyone is welcome. Rest assured that there’s no violent or mature content in Breakthrough T1D One World. Roblox has a number of tools and safeguards to ensure that content created on their platform is family friendly, including chat filters and customizable parental controls. Roblox also offers an FAQ with common questions about privacy and security.

Can I make a donation to Breakthrough T1D inside Breakthrough T1D One World?
