About
Our Breakthrough T1D Hike Don’t Spike event on Saturday, November 8 will take advantage of the cooler weather to head south to Steven’s Creek County Park in Cupertino. This is a moderately challenging loop of ~7.2 miles with a 1,200-foot elevation gain (AllTrails map link). The hike begins with a sequence of hills that allow us to conquer most of the ascent in the first 2 miles, while our legs are fresh. At the summit of Maisie’s Peak, we’ll enjoy a sweeping, near-360-degree view of Silicon Valley and the surrounding hills. We’ll then begin a gently winding, shaded descent on single-track trails, pausing for a break at a picnic area at the halfway point. This section is followed by a mix of rolling inclines, declines, and level terrain alongside the reservoir, guiding us back to our starting point.
Along with the views, we can expect to see vineyards, Steven’s Creek Reservoir, quail, horses, and some especially well-fed California newts. Dogs on leash are welcome. Of course, along the way we’ll have a chance to exchange experiences, insights, and questions about T1D! We’ll meet at 9:30AM in the Villa Maria parking lot of Steven’s Creek Park (Google map link). Parking is available ($6, credit cards only), along with restrooms.
This is the latest in a series of events designed for T1D adults and their supporters who enjoy scenic Bay Area hikes of ~5-8 miles with other like-minded individuals, and who enjoy the benefits for glucose control that hikes can provide.
