T1D Adults Hike Don’t Spike

April 19, 2025, San Jose, CA
9:30 am

Our next Breakthrough T1D Hike Don’t Spike event for adults will be held April 19th in scenic Alum Rock Park in San Jose. This is a moderate 5.8 mile, 950’ elevation gain hike that starts in the main part of the park nestled in a tree-lined canyon alongside an active creek with once-famous mineral springs.  We’ll ascend a long but gentle switchback past a variety of ferns with the sounds of the creek in the background until we reach the south rim, where wildflowers overlook San Jose in the distance.  A gentle descent is followed by more creekside trails alongside seashell-bearing sandstone, and a short ascent to the sunny North Rim trail before returning to the starting point.  Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed.  We’ll meet at 9:30AM in the parking lot near the Youth Science Institute, where bathrooms are available.  Parking fees of $6 may be in effect.

This is the latest in a series of events designed for T1D adults who enjoy trail hikes of ~5-8 miles in the Bay Area with other like-minded T1D adults, and who enjoy the benefits for glucose control that hikes can provide. Before hitting the trail, we’ll share tips on managing T1D in the great outdoors. If you’d like to join us, please register at the link below.
