As with anything new, there might be some worries or hesitations about how this year will go. Whether your child is moving up a grade level or headed off to college, making a plan ahead of time will help ensure you have peace of mind while your child is away. We\u2019ve put together some helpful information to guide you in the right direction of setting your child up for success this school year when it comes to managing their T1D. Keep reading to learn more!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where Do I Start?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/northernflorida\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/103\/2022\/08\/endo.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-7370 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/northernflorida\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/103\/2022\/08\/endo-200x168.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"126\" \/><\/a>The first step is to talk to your child\u2019s endocrinologist and ensure you have a Diabetes Medical Management Plan (DMPP) put together for the school year \u2013 you may already have one, but it should be continually updated throughout the years. The DMMP is essentially a document that explains what your child needs to successfully take care of their diabetes will they are at school.<\/p>\n<p>The DMPP should include information on your child\u2019s diagnosis, contact information for you and their medical team, and specific medical orders for checking their blood glucose levels and administering insulin. Your child\u2019s school nurse or administrators will use the DMPP to create an individualized healthcare plan specific to your child\u2019s needs. If your child is going off to college, the DMPP will help keep them on track when it comes to managing their T1D.<\/p>\n<p>More information on DMMPs and how to help students with diabetes succeed in school can be found on the American Diabetes Association website as part of their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.diabetes.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2020-06\/SchoolguidepdfMay2020.pdf\"><strong>Safe at School<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0program!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Setting Up A Diabetes Emergency School Kit<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of course, your child will have their everyday diabetes supplies that they need to take care of themselves and their T1D. However, you need to put together a diabetes kit to have at school in case of an emergency because you never know what may happen \u2013 it\u2019s better to be overprepared rather than underprepared! The kit should include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Charging equipment &#8211; extra batteries or charging cords for their continuous glucose monitor (CGM) and insulin pump<\/li>\n<li>Blood glucose testing supplies \u2013 the meter, blood sugar test strips, and lancets<\/li>\n<li>High blood sugar supplies &#8211; insulin syringes or pens<\/li>\n<li>Low blood sugar supplies \u2013 glucagon, glucose tabs, snacks, and juices<\/li>\n<li>Extra supplies &#8211; pump site changes and CGM sensors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/northernflorida\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/103\/2022\/08\/Untitled-design.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-7369 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/northernflorida\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/103\/2022\/08\/Untitled-design-200x200.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Go through the kit with your child\u2019s school nurse, teacher, and administrators to ensure they know how everything works and when it is needed. By explaining what everything is and how it\u2019s used, you\u2019ll be confident that they know how to help your child in case of an emergency. A <a href=\"\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/socentralohio\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/08\/Back2School-504_D2.pdf\">504 Plan<\/a> is a legal (written) document specifying what \u201creasonable\u201d modifications and accommodations the school must provide for a student with a disability (generally put into place for a student with a medical disability such as diabetes). Children with T1D are protected under this law!<\/p>\n<p>504 Plans are a way for you to hold the school accountable for meeting your child\u2019s needs while in the school\u2019s care. Remember, though, that this is a partnership you are building with your child\u2019s school, and all parties have a role in the 504 process.
