Tzield (teplizumab-mzwv) is the first disease-modifying therapy for individuals at-risk for developing T1D. (At-risk means that they exhibited 2+ T1D-related autoantibodies\u2013antibodies against one\u2019s own self\u2013and their blood glucose is starting to be abnormal, but they have not yet become insulin dependent.)<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in history, there is an approved therapy that addresses the autoimmunity behind T1D\u2013not just the symptoms that it causes in 1.4 million Americans.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Northern Florida chapter of Breakthrough T1D will continue this effort to push monumental research advances forward through their three annual walks this spring\u2013April 16 in Orlando, April 22 in Jacksonville, and April 29 in Tampa. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Breakthrough T1D One Walk is the largest T1D event in the world that powers more research, enables more advocacy, and funds more support for those living with T1D. Individuals, families and corporations that join Breakthrough T1D One Walk are a part of the lasting footprint that will continue to make history for the T1D community now, and for generations to come.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are excited to host families and friends in the T1D community across Northern Florida this year. It occurs when the body\u2019s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, called beta cells. While its causes are not yet entirely understood, scientists believe that both genetic factors and environmental triggers are involved. Its onset has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. There is nothing you can do to prevent T1D, and\u2014at present\u2014nothing you can do to get rid of it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About Breakthrough T1D<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Breakthrough T1D is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes research.
