Men on a Mission – Dr. Howard W. Harris
in General
Meet one of this year’s Dream Gala Men on a Mission, Dr. Howard W. Harris, as we honor his continued support and dedication to Breakthrough T1D.
Nothing could have prepared Dr. Howard W. Harris to receive the painful news five years ago that his own 6-year old son, Hilton, had type 1 diabetes. With Howard’s education as a physician and fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon, he felt blessed that he immediately understood how to help his son manage the disease. Yet this insight was also a burden, as he is more aware of the complexity of T1D and the present and future risks to an insulin-dependent child. Dr. Harris is involved with the Breakthrough T1D because of his passion to improve the quality of Hilton’s life and to help develop a cure for his son and other T1D patients.
Howard is thankful for Hilton’s maturity and resolve about his management and diagnosis of T1D. Hilton has worked to memorize the carbohydrate count of various foods to help with calculations for his insulin dosing. Parents of Hilton’s friends regularly compliment him for his positive attitude and discipline about monitoring his blood glucose levels despite the constant finger sticks, carbohydrate counting and insulin pump dosing. Howard is better able to meet the rigorous demands of a surgeon’s schedule knowing that his active, athletic 11-year old son is dedicated to managing his T1D.
Howard and Hilton enjoy basketball, hunting, water sports, and snow skiing with family and friends. Howard and his wife, Jennifer, live in Southlake and have three children that attend Grapevine Faith Christian School.
The Harris’ are excited about new research in continuous glucose monitoring and the artificial pancreas project. Once a cure for T1D is found, Hilton wants to go to the gun range with dad for a little shooting practice with his glucometer and insulin pump as the targets!
