Bayard and his family have been involved with Breakthrough T1D for many years; Bayard\u2019s two sons live with T1D, as well as his cousin. In honor of National Diabetes Awareness Month, he shared their experiences with T1D.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For someone who isn\u2019t familiar with T1D: what is day-to-day life with T1D like? \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-7665\" src=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/nyc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/157\/2022\/11\/king-family-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/nyc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/157\/2022\/11\/king-family-2.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/nyc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/157\/2022\/11\/king-family-2-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My first son Theo was diagnosed with type 1 when he was five years old in 2008. \u00a0My son had\u00a0neither a pump nor a\u00a0continuous glucose monitor (CGM) for the first three years. \u00a0It was a\u00a0regimen of about ten finger pricks per day during these years,\u00a0between shots of long- and short- acting insulin. \u00a0Theo could not understand why this\u00a0routine\u00a0never ended. \u00a0And the medical providers only focused on\u00a0the medical, not the mental\u00a0health side of treating\u00a0diabetes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Nowadays it\u2019s much more manageable. \u00a0Theo and\u00a0Alex are older and wear a CGM, which is life\u00a0transforming. \u00a0Our medical providers provide the full range of\u00a0medical and mental\u00a0health\u00a0services. \u00a0However, it still never ends\u2026. the boys still need to remember to bring\u00a0glucose\u00a0medications,\u00a0watch for highs and\u00a0lows, change sites, etc. \u00a0But if we go on a trip, we have to make sure we pack all we need for diabetes. \u00a0Outdoor trips like skiing or hiking also present some wrinkles\u00a0\u2014 such as whether to wear a pump on a particular outing.<\/li>\n<li>Additionally, there is the job of inventory\u00a0management. \u00a0There are approximately 30\u00a0pieces of\u00a0equipment to remember to keep in\u00a0the closet,\u00a0from insulin to batteries for the backup blood glucose meters. We have seven\u00a0different insurance providers\/health\u00a0reimbursement entities, three mail order\u00a0pharmacies, one mail order medical supplier, one local pharmacy, and two other mail order providers of related equipment. \u00a0All of them need coordination. \u00a0There\u2019s endless paperwork.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What do you wish people knew about living with T1D? \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You never stop worrying about how your children are handling this condition. \u00a0Type 1 means my boys must always change their sites and always keep glucose tabs on their persons. \u00a0It means that parents give up parenting a little and become health care workers. \u00a0It can also lead to tension within the family unit as the management of diabetes takes up time and can push other family priorities. It also means that there are a lot more medical appointments. \u00a0There\u2019s never any laissez-faire.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>For those living with T1D and those who love someone with T1D, looking Forward is what fuels our vision and mission to cure, prevent and treat type 1 diabetes and its complications. What and who are you fighting for? \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Like all people impacted by T1D we hope for the cure. The technology advances have been fabulous, and we are super grateful; but you still have to manage the condition, and that\u2019s work. \u00a0Children and adolescents forget to manage so as parents we must be constantly vigilant. We fight for our sanity as we worry constantly about the health of our loved ones. \u00a0And of course, we\u00a0fight for their long-term health. \u00a0We always worry that our sons\u2019 health could be\u00a0compromised, and their quality of life affected by the long-term\u00a0impact of\u00a0higher blood sugar.<\/li>\n<li>About 10 years ago I was driving home from Washington, DC with a friend and there was a big traffic jam on one of the Delaware bridges. \u00a0About 10 cars ahead of us this man got out of his car and walked back towards us and was knocking on every car window. \u00a0We didn\u2019t know why. Finally, he got to our car, and we rolled down the window \u2014 he was looking for sugar and announced he had diabetes. \u00a0He looked miserable. \u00a0Fortunately, I had glucose tabs in my pocket like I always seem to. \u00a0I gave the whole tube of tabs to this man. \u00a0He looked ecstatic and gobbled them down. \u00a0I walked him back to his car as he was still unsteady. \u00a0I think about him when I think about my sons.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-7664\" src=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/nyc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/157\/2022\/11\/king-family.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/nyc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/157\/2022\/11\/king-family.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/nyc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/157\/2022\/11\/king-family-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>There are two good things about type 1\u00a0diabetes: \u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>I bonded with my\u00a0oldest\u00a0son, as we worked\u00a0together\u00a0to manage the condition from\u00a0the\u00a0age of 5.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0From time to time, a friend will call me to ask me to talk to the parent of a newly diagnosed child with type 1. \u00a0I am always pleased to calm the nerves, listen, console, and give hope to parents.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every day, the Breakthrough T1D community is moving #ForwardAs1 to improve the lives of people living with type 1 diabetes (T1D).
