About Breakthrough T1D Children’s Congress<\/h2>\n

Voices raised for T1D research<\/h3>\n

Breakthrough T1D 2023 Children\u2019s Congress will take place from July 9 \u2013 11, 2023, in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n

Every two years, more than 160 children living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) gather in Washington, D.C., to meet face-to-face with some of the top decision-makers in the U.S. government. The children represent all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The Delegates in Breakthrough T1D\u2019s Children\u2019s Congress enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to help Members of Congress understand what life with T1D is like and why research to fund life-changing therapies until a cure can be found is so critical. They speak up on behalf of the millions of people living with T1D and the families and friends who love them.<\/p>\n

Children making history<\/h3>\n

The Breakthrough T1D Children\u2019s Congress T1D advocacy program was inspired by a boy from Massachusetts named Tommy Solo. One day, at age nine, he asked his mother, \u201cWhy can\u2019t kids go to Washington and tell their Representatives about what it is like to have type 1 diabetes and let them know that we want scientists to find a cure?\u201d His mom and other Breakthrough T1D volunteers agreed and, in 1999, the first-ever Breakthrough T1D Children\u2019s Congress took place in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n

Since then, 11 successful Children\u2019s Congresses have been held, one every other year, and more than 1,000 kids with T1D have served as Delegates. Breakthrough T1D Children\u2019s Congress has been essential to securing continued government funding of T1D research and to raise awareness of the daily burden of Americans living with this serious autoimmune disease.<\/p>\n

Delegates form lifelong friendships, meet T1D role models, develop leadership skills, and leave Children\u2019s Congress empowered to use their voices for the change that will improve their lives and the lives of all people affected by T1D.<\/p>\n

Meet Natalie Stanback: Breakthrough T1D 2023 Children\u2019s Congress Chair<\/h1>\n

Natalie Stanback isn\u2019t new to fighting for the type 1 diabetes community. In 2019, she came to Washington DC with her daughter, Nadia to bring awareness to the importance of federal funding for T1D research. Last year, she briefed Congress on the real-world impact of the insulin affordability crisis.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why she\u2019s the perfect person to serve as Chair at the Breakthrough T1D 2023 Children\u2019s Congress. She knows T1D; she knows Advocacy\u2014and she knows how to get things done on Capitol Hill!<\/p>\n

Along with her daughter, Nadia, who was a Breakthrough T1D 2019 Children\u2019s Congress Delegate, and her husband, Isaiah, a former NFL wide receiver, Natalie will lead 165 Delegates from all 50 states, along with 5 countries, to tell Congress what it\u2019s like to live with T1D, and what they need to do to help.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am so excited to be Chair of Breakthrough T1D 2023 Children\u2019s Congress!\u201d Natalie said. \u201cLast time, we were awestruck by the event. We can\u2019t wait to come back to Washington and continue this important work with all the Delegates.\u201d<\/p>\n

When Nadia was diagnosed with T1D at the age of 3, the diagnosis did not come out of the blue. Natalie\u2019s brother, Michael, had been diagnosed 24 years prior. \u201cGiven my prior knowledge and experience, Nadia\u2019s diagnosis was breathtaking but not as traumatic as it could have been,\u201d Natalie said. Thankfully, Nadia is doing great. She\u2019s active in sports and she is very involved in the daily management of her T1D.<\/p>\n

Natalie still raves about Breakthrough T1D 2019 Children\u2019s Congress. Seeing the impact and feeling the power firsthand is the main reason they are coming back to chair the event.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was the best whirlwind that we\u2019ll forever remember,\u201d Natalie said. \u201cWe loved the panels, the information and the ability to DO something,\u201d she continued. \u201cIt was such a tangible validation and inspiration. I hope that such is the experience and take-away for all of the families and Delegates.\u201d<\/p>\n

Breakthrough T1D Children\u2019s Congress is one of the most important things Breakthrough T1D does. Founded in 1999, this event is one of the key drivers that advances Breakthrough T1D\u2019s Advocacy agenda. This event typically happens every other year, but it was canceled in 2021 due to COVID-19. Natalie and the Delegates are ready to make up for lost time!<\/p>\n

This year, the focus will be on the Special Diabetes Program (SDP). This program currently provides $150 million annually to T1D research through the National Institutes of Health, the country\u2019s premier medical research agency. The SDP also complements Breakthrough T1D\u2019s research efforts, allowing Breakthrough T1D and the NIH to collaborate to advance T1D research as quickly as possible. This program is set to expire in September and renewing it is Breakthrough T1D\u2019s biggest priority\u2014and the #1 job for the Delegates.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe SDP is vital,\u201d said Natalie. \u201cBy spreading awareness in the halls of Congress and meeting with our lawmakers, we can ensure the research made possible by this program continues. We will make sure the needs of the T1D community are heard loud and clear!\u201d<\/p>\n

The Delegates will also speak to the rest of Breakthrough T1D\u2019s advocacy agenda, which includes our efforts around insulin affordability.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am looking forward to encouraging other parents to hold on to hope, to count their blessings and to seek the silver linings in this journey,\u201d Natalie said. \u201cThat their voices and efforts are meaningful and greatly impact Breakthrough T1D\u2019s progress and footprint. It will take all of us. We must keep going.\u201d<\/p>\n
