Family Honoree - Our T1D Story

Our journey with Breakthrough T1D began in 2012, shortly after our daughter Maggie—just nine years old at the time—was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Like so many families, we were overwhelmed at first, but quickly found hope and direction through this incredible organization. By 2013, we had formed our first Beat the Bridge team, rallying more than 100 friends and family members to support Maggie and the mission to find a cure. Over the years, Joel proudly served on the chapter board, and Sandy participated in a number of volunteer roles, each one deepening our commitment.
Today, Maggie is a college graduate who continues to thrive, even while managing the daily challenges of this condition. The progress we’ve seen in the tools and technologies available to her has been extraordinary—and it’s all thanks to the advances powered by Breakthrough T1D research and advocacy.
We believe the next decade holds even greater promise. That’s why we remain dedicated to Breakthrough T1D’s mission to cure, prevent, and treat T1D—and to the vibrant, compassionate community and critical resources it provides for those living with the condition and their families.
