{"id":7088,"date":"2022-09-27T11:01:52","date_gmt":"2022-09-27T18:01:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/pacificnwandseattleguild\/?p=7088"},"modified":"2025-12-01T20:29:01","modified_gmt":"2025-12-01T20:29:01","slug":"clinical-trials-moving-t1d-research-forward","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/greaternorthwest\/2022\/09\/27\/clinical-trials-moving-t1d-research-forward\/","title":{"rendered":"Clinical Trials : Moving T1D Research Forward"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Those of us in the T1D community in the great Pacific Northwest are lucky.\u00a0 It\u2019s not too often you hear lucky and T1D in the same sentence.<\/p>\n<p>However, those in the T1D community, the larger community around the whole country and even the world are lucky that some of the preeminent research facilities are here in the PNW.\u00a0 Some of the leading T1D research happens here in our own backyard, and we are able to take advantage of that research by volunteering to participate in their clinical trials.\u00a0 Here in the PNW we are home to Benaroya Research Institute, Rainier Clinical Research, University of Washington Diabetes Institute, Oregon Health &amp; Science University (OHSU), and Rocky Mountain Clinical Research (Idaho).<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is a clinical trial?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A clinical trial is a research study involving human volunteers that tries to answer a specific health question. Clinical trials closely monitor people\u2019s progress as they take part in the study of an investigational drug or device.\u00a0 Today, carefully conducted clinical trials are the safest and fastest way to find treatments that work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why are clinical trials important?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Breakthrough T1D is proud that the number of trials we support has grown from a small handful ten years ago to over 70 today.\u00a0 This indicates our research strategy is paying off, with more potential drugs and devices than ever being tested. However, up to\u00a080% of the trials are delayed due to slow patient recruitment, resulting in delays getting answers, increased costs and disincentive to sponsors to test potential therapies. Bottom line: Slow patient recruitment is slowing our progress toward introducing new therapies to people with diabetes and our mission to find cures, treatments and prevention tools for T1D.<\/p>\n<p>You might ask why you would want to participate in a trial?\u00a0 There are several good reasons that can benefit you and also the larger T1D community.\u00a0 For instance, anyone reading this blog has spent hours helping to raise money for Breakthrough T1D to fund T1D research.\u00a0 By volunteering, you can maximize the impact of the funds you raise.<\/p>\n<p>Another great reason to volunteer is to be at the cutting edge of science and learning about where we are headed.\u00a0 An additional benefit is making the personal connections to the folks performing research and your fellow participants.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where can I find clinical trials?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Breakthrough T1D has an easy-to-use tool called the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakthrought1d.org\/impact\/research\/clinical-trials\/\"><strong>Clinical Trials Connection<\/strong><\/a>, which asks users simple questions\u2014about where they live, the distance they can travel and other characteristics\u2014to match them with trials for which they may be eligible.
