About

My son Dominic is 18 years old and graduated from Spencerport High School in 2024.  When Dominic was just 3 years old, he was diagnosed with type one diabetes (T1D). It was after a few days of excessive thirst, frequent urination, and lethargy, that a visit to his doctor revealed the inevitable truth. Like all T1D families know all too well, the next three days in the hospital were spent regulating Dominic’s blood sugar along with “boot camp” training for our family on how to care for a child with diabetes, something that would be our new “normal”. The shock of that day is so easy to recall. Dominic doesn’t remember what life was like before diabetes. He is very brave and never complains about the finger pricks and insulin injections. His daily fortitude is something we admire.

Dominic knows all too well the feelings and consequences associated with high and low blood sugar levels. He has to limit some of his favorite foods as they cause a spike in his blood sugar many hours after he has eaten. In October 2016 Dominic suffered a severe seizure due to low blood sugar levels during the night. The next 12 hours were some of the most stressful, our family has been through. it’s days like that which serve as a constant reminder of why we must continue to do all that we can to raise money to fight this challenging disease.

Our family has been involved with Breakthrough T1D since 2010 participating in many Walks and Galas.  I served on the board of directors from 2014 to 2020. Over the 15 years that we have been in this fight, we have seen amazing advancements in technology that have improved Dominic’s daily life and management of the disease.
