Colton's Story

Colton is a 7th grader at Depew Middle School, in Depew, NY, a suburb outside of Buffalo. He was diagnosed with type 1 on June 2, 2019, two weeks before the end of kindergarten when he was 6 years old. In 2020, during the start of covid, he became a podder. He has been using the Omnipod since then, as his level of activity works best with a tubeless pump.

He was playing soccer then, and was ready to start mini tackle football. It was a challenging adventure to say the least!

Colton continued to play soccer in the fall, winter, & spring each year. He loves being goalie & any offensive positions. He played junior tackle football again in 2023. In 2024, he decided to try field lacrosse, and loved it so played again the following summer. By 2025, he was so excited to finally start modified sports and was the main goalie for Boys Soccer. He uses his entire body to save goals: rolling, jumping and diving to stop the ball. It’s incredible to watch!

In winter 2025, he joined the Modified Boys Swim team. He tackled the freestyle stroke, and participated in 50 meter & 100 meter freestyle events, as well as the 200 meter medley relay with 3 of his teammates. His last meet, he swam his first 50 meter breaststroke!

Colton has been gearing up the last 3 months for lacrosse. He has attended weekly lax clinics to tackle a new position~ field lacrosse goalie. He has been loving it and can’t wait for Modified Lacrosse to start!

Colton has never let type 1 take away his desire to play any sport. It may require extra planning, prep & pausing, but it is possible to be an athlete and juggle type 1. Each sport requires a different approach, so it is important to listen to your body, pay attention to how your body responds, and examine your graph and trends. Using the technology we have available, allows us to be proactive….and that is key with sports! Colton eats alot of protein packed complex carbs to keep his BG up. He refuels with Motts Active Hydration drinks which do not spike his bg. He also loves grapes, apples or bananas as his healthy go-to fast carbs!

We hope you will be inspired by Colton’s tenacity! Continue to do all the things you want to experience! And do it proudly, because it takes courage to be an athlete with type 1! We are beyond proud of Colton!
