On April 18th, 4,500 participants and 100 volunteers came together for the Breakthrough T1D Walk, Arizona, raising more than $550,000 to fund life changing type 1 diabetes (T1D) research.

For families like Rebecca’s, the impact goes far beyond one day.

Below, she shares what this journey and this community have meant to her daughter, Hannah.

Hi, it’s me again, Rebecca. As previously shared, my daughter Hannah was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) after our trip to Disneyland in November 2024.

Since then, Hannah has attended camp, made lifelong friends, and joined the Breakthrough T1D Arizona Walk on April 18th!! It was such a great day for our family. Hannah’s team raised over $7,100, and she really took the lead on fundraising efforts. She reached out to friends and family, presented in front of my coworkers and her class and even set up a lemonade stand with her friends.

Though she’s only been living with T1D for a year and a half, and this is  our second walk, it’s already become one of the days she cherishes most. She gets to be around people who understand what she’s going through and reconnect with other T1D friends. It means a lot to her to have that kind of support.

Together, we’ve raised over $550,000 to fund life-changing research through the 2026 Breakthrough T1D Arizona Walk, but we’re not done yet. There’s still time to make an impact before June 30th. Please share your walk day experience with friends and family and invite them to be part of something that’s changing lives.

We’re looking forward to an exciting summer with travel to Europe and Camp AZDA, and thanks to the research funded by Breakthrough T1D, we can do it with greater peace of mind. Your support of Breakthrough T1D has helped drive nearly every major advancement in type 1 diabetes, changing lives in meaningful ways.

Our family is so excited with the results of the Eledon trial, which Breakthrough T1D helped fund. Just four weeks after transplant, ten patients are now 100% insulin independent. One of them, Katie Beth Hand, has remained insulin-independent for over three months and continues to share her inspiring story.

Thank you for helping Hannah and everyone living with T1D live a healthy life. We can’t wait to celebrate with you when we make T1D a thing of the past!

Sincerely,
Rebecca

Because of supporters like you, stories like Hannah’s are possible and progress like this continues!

There is still time to build on the momentum from April 18th. Every gift before June 30th helps accelerate research and brings us closer to a future without type 1 diabetes.
