Keynote Address: From Research Innovation to Regulatory Approval: Bringing Breakthrough Therapies Home

Promising advances in type 1 diabetes research and development bring the hope of delaying, preventing, and curing type 1 diabetes. But before this promise can be realized, therapies must first be approved by regulatory agencies. In this talk, we will present exciting updates in type 1 diabetes research and discuss how Breakthrough T1D works with researchers, clinicians, sponsors, regulators, and others in the T1D community to accelerate the path to bringing new treatments to people with T1D.

Beyond Insulin: Adjunctive Therapies in Type 1 Diabetes Care – Ocotillo

In the evolving landscape of diabetes care there are now many new available therapies. However, the management of type 1 diabetes is still limited to insulin therapy. This talk will explore the role of adjunctive therapies in the management of type 1 diabetes, highlighting how these treatments could complement insulin therapy. Attendees will learn about research on potential adjunctive therapies that Breakthrough T1D is funding, including SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists, and their potential benefits and risks.

Practical Tips for Controlling T1D During and After Exercise – Cottonwood

The focus of this session is to provide practical tips for reaching your fitness goals while living with T1D, including: how to reduce and eliminate hypoglycemia during exercise, how to get rid of post-exercise hypoglycemia, understanding the variables that cause changes to your glucose levels besides food and insulin, and how to effectively prepare for success!

The Role of the Caregiver, Partner, and Friend. How to be Helpful and Supportive While Maintaining a Strong Relationship – Brittlebush

This session will explore the inherent difficulties in helping loved ones to manage type 1 diabetes while maintaining a relationship. Topics will include both difficulties in doing so and strategies for daily communication. This session will be aimed at both parents and loved ones of adults with type 1 diabetes.

Clinical Trials and Early Detection: Unlocking the Future of T1D – Cottonwood

Join this interactive workshop in which you will be introduced to the principles and practices of mindful self-compassion and how they can be harnessed to navigate the challenges of life with T1D with greater peace and clarity. You will also learn about the science of self-compassion and learn compassion-based techniques that you can use in your day-to-day life to reduce stress, enhance resilience and motivation, and cultivate peace of mind and heart no matter what diabetes throws your way!

Join this session to learn about new and emerging technologies in type 1 diabetes. We will explore newly approved devices and other T1D technology. Discover how diabetes technology can improve medical outcomes and quality of life. No matter how long you or your loved one has lived with T1D, there is something here for everyone.

Linda Santo shares the inspirational story of her father, Ron Santo, Hall of Fame third basemen for the Chicago Cubs who was the first Major League Baseball player to play with type 1 diabetes.

9:00 – 9:45 am – Session #1: Navigating School, Sports, and Stress with T1D – A Medical Student’s Personal Perpective

Mac will recount his experiences navigating the many challenges of being a teen with T1D, sharing his insights, triumphs, and challenges. He will also talk about the transition from middle to high school and high school to college, explaining how he optimized his diabetes management along the way. Teens will have the opportunity for open Q&A.

10:00 – 10:45 am – Session #2: Greater Than Our Highs & Lows: Building Resilience & Compassion through Our Lives with T1D

Join other teens with T1D to connect, meet new friends, play some games, do a craft, and just hang out. Come join us for this interactive session where you will learn simple, but powerful tools to handle the ups and downs of life with T1D. We’ll explore how practicing self-compassion can help you stress less, bounce back stronger, and feel more confident no matter what challenges come your way. You’ll also get to try out techniques to help you stay calm, focused, and ready to face whatever comes your way with confidence and care.
