Breakthrough T1D is saddened by the recent passing of Marilyn Fishbone, a dedicated type 1 diabetes (T1D) champion and longtime pillar in the T1D community.

Marilyn and her late husband, Dr. Gerald Fishbone, first engaged with Breakthrough T1D in 1969 after their son was diagnosed with T1D at the age of 18 months. Marilyn then founded the New Haven, Connecticut chapter, and together she and her husband committed to advancing Breakthrough T1D’s mission for decades. Their eldest grandson Harris was diagnosed with T1D in 2001 at the age of 5.

Marilyn’s legacy is carried forward by her children: Daughter, Lisa Fishbone Wallack, became Chair of the International Board of Directors in 2024 and had previously served as Vice Chair. She had also served as president of the Greater New England Chapter. Marilyn and Gerald’s son, Scott, is a dedicated Breakthrough T1D volunteer leader who serves on the New Jersey Chapter board and on the chapter’s Executive Committee as advocacy co-chair.

Breakthrough T1D is grateful for Marilyn’s years of impactful service and the incredible leadership of the Fishbone family. They have left an indelible mark on Breakthrough T1D, and Marilyn will be missed.
