Breakthrough T1D welcomes another step forward in the effort to reclassify deceased donor islets as organs through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Today, the Co-Chairs of the Congressional Diabetes Caucus — Representatives Diana DeGette (D-CO) and Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) — sent a letter to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration noting our HHS proposal and urging the agency to reconsider the regulatory pathway for deceased donor islets.
Deceased donor islets can help people living with type 1 diabetes today. But the current regulatory pathway isn’t built to get this therapy to as many people as possible who could benefit from it. That has to change — and Breakthrough T1D will continue working with our champions in Congress and the Administration until it does.
We extend our deepest thanks to Representatives DeGette and Bilirakis for their leadership and to the thousands of advocates in our community whose voices made this moment possible.
