Nancy Adleman’s journey with Breakthrough T1D began when her daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at just 13 months old in late 2020 — an experience that inspired her to support other T1D families as well as the broader T1D community.
Nancy earned a PhD in neurosciences from Stanford University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institute of Mental Health. She then spent 12 years as a psychology professor at The Catholic University of America, where she taught undergraduate and graduate students and conducted neuroimaging and cognitive research on the interaction between emotion and attention in the brain. Having recently retired from her tenured position, Nancy brings decades of firsthand experience with clinical research protocols — gained through her own involvement in research studies as a scientist — to her work with the T1D community. While her research background lies outside diabetes-specific fields, her prior experience gives her a deep understanding of how clinical trials work and what participation involves.
As a Breakthrough T1D Clinical Trial Education Volunteer, Nancy is dedicated to helping individuals and families in the Mid Atlantic region identify and navigate clinical trial opportunities. She is excited to empower the T1D community to take part in research that is advancing treatment, prevention, and, ultimately, a cure for T1D.
