Breakthrough T1D holds a special place in my family’s and my heart, as my younger sister Kate was diagnosed with T1D in December 2009 when she was six years old. For over 17 years, Kate has been an inspiration to our family. Despite facing the challenges it presents her every day, she has never let her T1D stand in the way of achieving her goals and living her best life. Kate graduated from Temple University this past May and is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Rutgers University, with the goal of one day helping children with T1D and their families.

Annually from 2012 to 2014, our family hosted Kate’s Ping Pong Tournament in support of Breakthrough T1D (at the time known as JDRF). Each year, our family was amazed by the generosity and dedication of our family and friends to help in putting on a successful community event. The ping pong tournaments raised over $30,000 in support of T1D support and research.

I am constantly inspired by Kate and the many others who live their best lives while overcoming the challenges of T1D. I cannot wait to conquer the Boston Marathon!

My family’s life drastically changed this year after our youngest, Allison, was diagnosed with T1D. Even though I’m a physician, I’ve recently learned a lot about what it takes to survive and thrive with this disease, and how far we have to go to improve the technology and reach for a cure. I am excited to be participating in my perennial favorite marathon this year, Boston, raising funds for Breakthrough T1D (Greater New England Chapter). Join me on this journey to make a difference to Allison and all those living with T1D!
