Presenters:
Lauren Connors, BSN, RN, Elementary School Nurse, Arlington Public Schools, Living with T1D since 1988
Lauren has worked as an elementary school nurse in Arlington Public Schools (APS) for the past six years. She serves as the Diabetes Care Coordinator for APS where she works in collaboration with APS Nurses, T1D students and their caregivers. Lauren assists in developing care plans for students with diabetes as well as monitoring adherence, effectiveness and progress of plans. She facilitates and attends meetings between students, family/caregivers, individual school nurses, social workers, classroom teachers, Principals, and Endocrine teams as needed. In 2017, Lauren implemented a system where each student with T1D wearing a Dexcom CGM could be monitored via iPad from their school’s Health Office. Living with T1D for over thirty years allows her to share first-hand knowledge about all things related to T1D. In addition to a BSN, Lauren holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science.
Kris Ferullo BSN, RN, CDCES, Nurse Manager Diabetes Services, Wentworth-Douglass Hospital
Kris has been a Diabetes Educator since 1993, Certified Diabetes Educator since 1996. She provides inpatient and outpatient Diabetes Education individually and in groups. The majority of time is spent working with the pediatric population and their families in CHaD (Children’s Hospital @ Dartmouth) @ Wentworth-Douglass Hospital. She is Insulin Pump and Continuous Glucose Monitor Certified. Kris is the Founder/Coordinator of 3 Diabetes camps offered annually. They are: Camp Lance-a-Lot Family; Camp Lance-a-Lot Teen (weekend getaways) & Camp Hot Shot—a week long day camp for children in grades 1-8. Kris is also the facilitator of multiple support groups for adults and children of different age groups. She is the Program Coordinator of our American Diabetes Association recognized program; and the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists NH Coordinating Body; Conference Committee chair since 2010.
Danielle King, BSN, RN, Elementary School Nurse, Waltham Public Schools, Mother of a Child with T1D
Danielle is an Elementary School Nurse for the past six years and currently works in the Waltham Public Schools. Pediatrics has been the focus of her nursing career and she has been fortunate to have positions in a community health center, local cancer center, in home early intervention program, pediatric hospital as a staff nurse and in a pediatric hospice program. Danielle became a local T1D mom seven years ago when one of her two amazing children was diagnosed with T1D. She calls herself a mom, a nurse, a sister and daughter, full time pancreas, part time runner and a directionally challenged hiker.
Ellen O’Donnell, PhD, Psychologist at MassGeneral Hospital for Children, Instructor at Harvard Medical School, Living with T1D since age 21
Dr. O’Donnell is a Psychologist at MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC) and an Instructor in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. She specializes in working with children and adolescents with medical illness and has been affiliated with the Diabetes Center at MGHfC since 2007. Dr. O’Donnell provides consultation and support to patients and families from the Diabetes Center. She also specializes in neuropsychological assessment and is interested in understanding how having a learning disability or ADHD impacts a child’s ability to manage a chronic illness like diabetes. Dr. O’Donnell works with patients with a variety of pediatric illnesses, but is especially interested in the challenges of having T1D since she is living with the disease herself.
