Are You Interested in Participating in a Research Study at OHSU to Learn More about the Potential of a New Smartphone Application to Help You Manage Your Type 1 Diabetes?
Hypoglycemia (glucose < 70 mg/dl) remains a limiting factor for optimal glucose control for many type 1 diabetics, despite the now common use of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems. Overnight hypoglycemia is particularly dangerous and may result in injury, poor sleep,
fear of low glucose and a loss of the ability to feel low glucose over time.
Many type 1 diabetics that manage their glucose with pump therapy have the option to use a sleep setting on their pump to assist in preventing overnight low glucose. However, there aren’t any similar artificial intelligence-based tools on the market for individuals managing their glucose with multiple daily injection (MDI) therapy.
WHAT IS THE DAILYDOSE SMART SNACK STUDY?
This study will evaluate a personalized decision support tool developed by OHSU, called DailyDose Smart Snack, available as a smart phone app that integrates the Dexcom G6 CGM and predicts the likelihood of overnight hypoglycemia. The app will then recommend a snack that would be appropriate to eat to prevent the predicted drop in glucose. This study will enroll adults ages 18 years or older who have been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes for at least 1 year, are currently using multiple daily injections, are using a CGM but still having frequent overnight hypoglycemia.
WHAT WILL STUDY PARTICIPANTS BE ASKED TO DO?
You will be on study for 8 weeks. For 4 of those weeks, you will manage your blood sugar as you normally do. If you currently use another CGM besides the Dexcom G6 sensor, we will give you the G6 to use during the 8 week study. You will use the DailyDose Smart Snack phone app during the other 4 weeks. You will be supplied with the recommend snacks that might be recommended at bedtime. During the course of the study, you will be provided an Apple watch to wear while you are sleeping. We will also track your weight and conduct weekly sleep quality surveys.
Participants will be compensated up to $400 for their time.
