Clinical trials advance treatments and care so people with type 1 diabetes (T1D) can live fuller, healthier lives.

For a treatment, drug, or device to make it into the hands of people with T1D, it must first complete a vital process: a series of clinical trials to ensure safety and efficacy. Currently, there are over 300 clinical trials for T1D. Enrolling in these clinical trials is essential to our mission: Accelerating life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent, and treat type 1 diabetes and its complications.

Below are a few trials that are ongoing in the Southern California region. If you meet the given eligibility criteria, we encourage you to follow the links provided for additional information about how to apply for the trial.

A Study of GNTI-122 in Adults Recently Diagnosed With T1D (POLARIS)
This study is evaluating the safety, tolerability, cellular kinetics, and biomarker changes in C-peptide over time of GNTI-122, an investigational cell therapy manufactured from a participant’s own blood cells in adult participants with recently diagnosed T1D. GNTI-122 is designed to help stop your body from attacking and destroying your beta cells.
Eligibility: Age 18-55 within 100 days of diagnosis
Location: University of California San Diego

A Study to Investigate Efficacy and Safety of Teplizumab Compared With Placebo in Participants 1 to 25 Years of Age With Stage 3 Type 1 Diabetes (βETA PRESERVE)
The purpose of this study is to measure change in glycemic control and prandial insulin independency over 52 weeks with teplizumab compared with placebo, both administered by intravenous (IV) infusion.
Eligibility: Age 1-25 within 8 weeks of diagnosis
Location: Marvel Clinical Research in Huntington Beach, CA

Improving Islet Transplantation Outcomes With Gastrin for Type I Diabetes
This study will evaluate whether taking Gastrin injections following a single islet transplantation is safe, improves how well the islet transplant works and/or helps increase the number of insulin-making cells in the islets.
Eligibility: Age 18-68 with T1D for at least 5 years and unstable blood glucose (see full list)
Location: City of Hope in Duarte, CA
More info: https://clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT03746769

CNP-103 in Adolescent and Adult Subjects Ages 12-35 With Recently Diagnosed (Within 6 Months) Stage 3 Type 1 Diabetes (T1D)
This study will assess the safety, tolerability, pharmacodynamics, and efficacy of multiple ascending doses of CNP-103, an investigational disease-modifying nanoparticle therapy.
Eligibility: Age 12-35 within 6 months of diagnosis
Location: Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego
